Why is loving through action so necessary as part of the Christian life? Because the model of all Christian love is the love of Jesus and this love was an active, living love, not just confined to words, but put into practice in the most incredible ways.
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35
Jesus said this during the Last Supper He shared with His disciples. He said this after He has washed their feet, that most humble, lowly act – an awesome expression of love from our Servant King. Jesus didn’t just talk about love – He showed love in the most selfless, intimate, tender ways. It is this which is one of the most incredible unique characteristics of our God.
There is only one measure of Christian love: the unconditional gift of self for the other, loving as Jesus loved. Authentic Christianity is about putting love into action as a number 1 priority in our day-to-day lives.
Put love for others into action every day – by loving those who are unloved, by forgiving those who have hurt us, by putting the needs of others above our own and by having an attitude of loving patience and self-control with our family members.
Love has to be the top priority of focus we have in our Christian walk: soaking in the love that God has for us; demonstrating the love that we have for God; following His call to love others. We mess up and make mistakes along the way, but if our focus remains on these things we will see love in action in our lives and we will be known by our fruit.
As we observe people around us, let us consider if we’re onlookers, waiting to accuse and judge, or if we’re onlookers waiting to see God work through each and every one who crosses our path.
