Tips for a Successful Year

The American Psychological Association (APA) says New Year’s resolutions can create anxiety if left unaccomplished. They recommend starting small and asking for support. The Better Business Bureau serving the Heart of Texas offers these tips to support consumers on their journey to a happier, healthier 2020:

  • Get fit with the right gym. There can be many benefits to working out at a public gym: classes, equipment, accountability and more.
    • 1. However, choose the place that’s right for you.
    • Know your fitness goals and set priorities so you can determine where to start. Always take a tour of facilities and read the contract closely to determine how much a membership costs each month. You can also check the gym’s business profile on bbb.org.
  • Watch for free trial scams. Like quitting smoking or losing weight, this can be a slow process.
    • You may even feel like you aren’t making much progress, so turning to “miracle” products may begin to seem like a good idea. Be careful when taking products for your health and should consult with your doctor first.
    • Second, products using big claims and celebrity endorsements may be attempting to lure you into a free trial scam. This is when a company claims it’ll send you a sample of its product for free, you just need to give your credit card information to pay shipping and handling. Later, you find a charge for the full cost of the product.
    • If this is the direction you decide to go when working on your new year, always read the terms and conditions carefully before placing your order and use your credit card for extra protection.
  • Care for your mental health, too. This extends beyond your physical health. Helpguide.org emphasizes the importance of social connection when caring for your mental health. Take time this year to connect with old friends and meet new ones too.

Feeling Unimportant

It happens to most of us at some point in our life. The feeling that our existance doesn’t really matter or we aren’t any more special than the next person.  In  fact we often believe that others are far more important and talented than us.  We’ve been to a thousands services, seminars, retreats and group meetings and we’ve heard the statement at least twice that many times that  – YOU ARE IMPORTANT… GOD LOVES YOU… YOU ARE SPECIAL.  Yeah, yeah, Blah, Blah! Maybe we’re feeling good that day so we agree with those statements but, in our heart of hearts, we don’t really believe it or our actions would show it. We don’t want to be prideful so instead we go the opposite direction and insult God by denying His wisdom and brilliant creation.

Recently I attended a seminar and once again God used others to let me know He values me and others do, too.  I felt like the smallest, youngest and least experienced in the room.  I was surrounded by people who had accomplished great things and had years of higher education that exceeded the number of years I’ve even been alive. At the end of the evening several of these “brilliant” people came to talk to me about my life and found it inspiring and wonderful.  I know you probably think I should be over all that or maybe your asking the question of yourself, “How could someone like her feel that way?”

The answer is I’m just like you… I have dreams, disappointments, challenges, and obviously insecurities. I’m hoping as I share my very personal story that you will find out the same wonderful truth God is determined for me and you to learn. He loves you, He designed you for a UNIQUE purpose! Whether you believe it or not you are an inspiration to someone!  You have something to offer! You have value!

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 and “…you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 NLT

Fact Check: Health Care Law and W-2 Forms. A listener e-mailed us yesterday and pointed out a contradiction in the statements we posted on the blog yesterday and suggested we check it out and make sure we had our facts straight.  So I did a little digging at FactCheck.org.  Here’s what I discovered… It’s true that the value of employer-paid health insurance will be added as an information item on W-2 forms. But contrary to this widely circulating chain e-mail, it definitely will not be considered taxable income. (factcheck.org)

Your Faith Matters: Scientists See Connection Between Faith and Transplant Survival. The statistics suggest that the mortality rate for a liver transplant patient who does not believe in God is three times higher than for those who do. “This is a statistically significant difference,” said psychologist Franco Bonaguidi, who led the probe. Previous studies charting the effect of religion on health have suggested that faith tends to promote healthy lifestyles, for example discouraging tobacco, alcohol and sexual promiscuity. Belonging to a church or a religion can also help provide patients with a sense of purpose and a close support network, researchers have observed. (Christian Breaking News)

Secrets to Success Behind every scripture you read and hear, there is a voice from God that will reveal mysteries and revelation about the path that you should take in life.
When you read and hear God’s Word, He releases “Revelation” knowledge that will equip you and empowers you to have success. It comes freely when you make a decision to seek God wholeheartedly and meditate (contemplate, ponder) on God’s Word. It’s amazing somethings how extraordinary things happen when God’s revelation penetrates your life.
When Simon got the revelation that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Jesus said to him “…Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood [men] have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:17 AMP).
Like Simon who received the blessing from God because he had revelation in his life, you do not have to remain in the same place. If you will make a decision to seek God, by reading His Word, listening to God talk to you, and journal what you hear on a daily basis, you allow Him to reveal to you the secrets to success.

Be A Savy Shopper: Six Things Never to Say at an Auto Dealership (FoxNews)

  • Don’t Discuss Interest Rates Right Away – Remar Sutton, chairman of FoolProofMe.com advises to have the dealership fill out the contract  and then ask for a copy to show to a bank or credit union to compare rates. “If they say no, do not finance at the car dealership,” he says. “Any bank and any credit union will be glad to give you those figures. The only way you know your cheapest [option] with the car dealership is to compare line for line what they want you to put down on a loan.”
  • Don’t Talk Monthly Payments – Before setting foot into a dealership, know what you can afford and do not bring up monthly payment options right away.  “They can make the payments go up and down. Shopping payments is the most expensive way to shop for financing.”
  • Don’t Announce Your Trade-in Value – Experts recommend taking it to two or three dealerships or used car operations to get estimates of the car’s worth. “A dealership is under no obligation to give you what your car is worth,” explains Sutton.“It is perfectly legal for a car dealership to appraise your car and put a value on it in real dollars of say, $10,000. But they’ll look you in the eye and say, “We’ve been taking in cars like yours for $5,000 dollars.” If you fall for that, you just threw $5,000 out the window.”
  • Don’t Make the Salesperson Your BFF – Keep any exchanges with a salesperson on a professional level, don’t swap life stories. I would encourage you not to reveal personal information. Focus on the product and express your interest in the product.”
  • Be extra careful during test drives. -“They ask all kinds of things about you to try to find out how to use leverage about you,” says Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor at Edmunds.com. “The less they know about you, the stronger position you’ll be in.”
  • Don’t Show Your Emotions –Don’t let emotion play a factor in your car-buying decision. Even if a dealer has the car of your dreams, play it cool. Having a few options in mind may make it easier to negotiate and prevent you from making an impulse purchase.
  • Don’t Succumb to Pressure – Keep in mind, you can always return to the dealer later if you need more time to decide. If a salesperson is breathing down your neck Weintraub suggests saying: “I would like to do business with you if you treat me right. Pressuring me to buy today when I told you I’m not prepared to is going to lose my business.”

Six Months to Go Until The Largest Tax Hikes in History however, there’s more than just tax hikes and even Worst Surprise: Now, your insurance will be INCOME on your W2’s! Starting in 2011, (next year folks), your W-2 tax form sent by your employer will be increased to show the value of whatever health insurance you are given by the company. It does not matter if that’s a private concern or governmental body of some sort. If you’re retired? So what… your gross will go up by the amount of insurance you get. You will be required to pay taxes on a large sum of money that you have never seen. Take your tax form you just finished and see what $15,000 or $20,000 additional gross does to your tax debt. That’s what you’ll pay next year. For many, it also puts you into a new higher bracket so it’s even worse.
This is how the government is going to buy insurance for the15% that don’t have insurance and it’s only part of the tax increases. Here is a research of the summaries….. On page 25 of 29: TITLE IX REVENUE PROVISIONS- SUBTITLE A: REVENUE OFFSET PROVISIONS-(sec. 9001, as modified by sec. 10901) Sec.9002 “requires employers to include in the W-2 form of each employee the aggregate cost of applicable employer sponsored group health coverage that is excludable from the employees gross income.” (atr.org)
